An Example of Kigali City Floods, Rwanda

An Example of Floods in Ethiopia

Study Areas

The study area is focused on South Asia (Bangladesh and Sri Lanka) and Africa (Ethiopia and Rwanda). This project is carried out from Land- Atmosphere Interaction class at College of Engineering Graduate School of EWHA. Each country's geographical descriptions, disasters's situation and country wise mitigation and adaptation are given at different pages. Moreover, a generalized suggestion after studying about four countries are also provdied in future suggestion and scope of works section.

Future Suggestions and Studies

Adaptation and Mitigation Measures

  • Structural Measures:

  1. Improvement of existing infrastructures like dykes, dams, reservoirs

  2. Improvement of drainage system

  3. Soil erosion control to reduce land  degradation  caused by uncontrolled deforestation activities

  • Non Structural Measures:

  1. Capacity Building at all levels especially for decision makers

  2. Increase public awareness on flood situation in advance

  3. Update flood hazards maps according to the past extremes

  4. Introduce insurance policies

  5. Improve existing flood early warning system in the 4 countries  and Develop flood management models

Suggestion of Models

  1. Combination of atmospheric model and Hydrological model

  2. Example: Atmospheric Model:-WRF Model, ECMWF

The model examples to be adpated in study areas are given in the slide show
